Separating an Egg

There are various ways to separate an egg ranging from using a tool down to doing it the local way. However, here are the 3 easiest methods of separating an Egg.

Using a Separating Tool

When it comes to separating an egg, this is the most foolproof method. Utensils commonly known as Egg Separators can be used to separate an egg easily and can be found anywhere around you. The downside to this method however is that it consumes more time than other methods and is quite expensive. People tend to go for it because it is a lot less messier and reduces the risk of shell falling through.

Using the Shell

This method is the fastest and a favourite among skilled chefs and bakers. Some people call it the Shell swap or the Shell rock, whatever name you choose to call it goes. Although it is the fastest method, it requires a bit of time and skill to master.

If you want to use this method, first crack your egg against a flat surface. After this, try to cleanly and carefully split the shell open in half with your thumbs. When this is done, aim to catch the yolk in one of the shells and watch the egg white drip down. Remember that you’re doing all of this over a large bowl.

Note: Be careful not to let the shell get into the Yolk or puncture it as you go back and forth with it.

Using your hand

This is usually called the Yolk Fishing Method. All you need to do this are just your hands and a bowl. This method is the fastest for those who deal with bulk eggs as it works for any number of Eggs.

To begin this method, crack all of your eggs into a bowl gently. Then with clean hands, begin to “fish” out the yolk gently picking it from the bowl while the egg white drip from your hands. Place the Yolks in another bowl and repeat the process again. This is to ensure that the egg whites do not get in.

Note: if you haven’t mastered this method, don’t try it with too many eggs at once.

I couldn’t separate all the whites from my Yolk. Can I still use it?

Sometimes you cannot avoid getting egg whites into your Yolk. In fact, the fresher the egg, the harder it is to remove the Yolk completely. The good news is getting a little egg white in your Yolk doesn’t disturb your recipe. You can carry on without any worry.

Which is easier to separate? Cold eggs or Room temperature eggs?

Cold eggs are usually firmer and more difficult to break, however if you’re not confident in your egg breaking skills, it is better you use cold eggs. This is because using eggs straight from the fridge will better help you prevent Yolk breakage.

Room temperature eggs on the other hand are looser and a lot easier to separate. However, the downside is that the yolks are more likely to break. So this kind of egg is best for skilled chefs and bakers.

Can you remove an egg without breaking the shell?

Yes you can and surprisingly all you need is a needle! Just wiggle the needle around in the egg to make a hole. Be careful so as not to damage the egg Yolk. When you’ve made a whole wide enough, pour out your egg white and all that will remain is its Yolk.

How do you separate an egg without an egg separator?

Choose a spoon with openings that are not wide enough for an egg yolk to slip through. Hold the spoon over a bowl and crack an egg over it.  The whites will slip through the slots in the spoon leaving only the Yolk. Gently shake the spoon to help any remaining whites separate from the yolks and slide into the bowl.

What can I use instead of an egg Separator?

Egg separators are not the only means of separating an egg However they are more foolproof than other methods. Some other methods are Using your hand, using a slotted spoon, using a funnel, using a turkey baster

What is the importance of an egg separator?
